SEAFOOD SAFARI : RETAIL FISH SHOPS (PLETTENBERG BAY & KNYSNA)
Fresh Fish

Our shops are situated in close vicinity to where the local freshly caught fish are delivered for distribution. Our company’s own vessels provide fresh line caught hake and kingklip. We also cater small quantities of cape salmon, cob, gurnard and mackerel, amongst others. Apart from our own catches, we also collect fish from fishing vessels all along our coastline, as well as importing speciality fish such as salmon and kippers from as far as Scotland, Chile, Norway and Canada.

Smoked Products

We boast the largest variety of displayed seafood in the Garden Route. We have a smoker on premises in Plettenberg Bay and Knysna and produce freshly smoked products. The variety of smoked fish we produce on site includes smoked tuna, Chilean and Canadian salmon, trout, elf, snoek, mackerel, and large display smoked seafish.

Take Aways, Sushi and Oysters

Our delectable and delicately prepared sushi is now made in both shops. Our Knysna outlet has a wildly popular take-away section, providing the public with freshly produced meals of fish and chips, fish burgers, fish cakes, seafood platters, fried calamari and sole, and much more. From the homely kitchen in our Plett outlet, we supply freshly baked bread, platters of a selection of cooked fish, calamari, mussels and prawns... you choose it, we cook it. The Plett shop makes take-outs of fish dishes with spicy rice and/or sushi. Platters of oysters are opened for you, while you wait..

Oriental Condiments

Both shops endeavour to maintain an impressive variety of oriental condiments and recipe books. We stock a range of sauces, herbs, spices and other ingredients used particularly in Thai, Chinese, and Japanese cooking styles. We also stock hard-to-find items such as vanilla pods, saffron, rice paper and fenugreek. If your recipe calls for an illusive ingredient, come to us first!

Staff

In respect to providing employment within the local community, our philosophy has always been to endeavour to provide permanent jobs. Due to the seasonal nature of line fishing this has been a mammoth task. Even so, we have enjoyed an exceptionally good record of labour relations with very low staff turnover over the last few years. In fact many of our original staff are still with us today. This has been due to a good working relationship between management and staff in which ability and performance are the criteria for advancement. In house training has provided us with an excellent management team who have been promoted through the ranks. Our style of management is one of engendering team spirit in which all workers are valuable participants.

We are proud to note that our minimum wage currently exceeds our SETA requirements for similar position and companies. We work a 45 hour week, after three years service where normal leave is taken, we provide 4 weeks paid leave, a thirteenth cheque and a provident fund.

Please see our gallery for pictures of our staff.

White Stumpnose http://www.vegasinplett.co.za/general-info/214-general-information/424-white-stumpnose.html http://www.vegasinplett.co.za/general-info/214-general-information/424-white-stumpnose.html White stumpnose (Rhabdosargus globiceps) is a commercially fished species that is endemic to southern Africa’s temperate coasts. Recent studies suggest that this species exists in four separate stocks: Walvis Bay, Saldanha-Langebaan Lagoon, False Bay and Port Elizabeth. Due to the apparent decline in capture in Saldanha Bay, conservation has become one of the focal points of Marine and Coastal Management, a division of the Department of Environmental Affairs.

In this project we will determine whether the four R. globiceps stocks are genetically different from one another and whether they require different management strategies.
